The United States congratulates the millions of Venezuelans who exercised their democratic right to vote.

On September 26, Venezuelans went to the polls in large numbers to elect a new legislative assembly. After a peaceful election process that was free of major incidents, the results for nearly all of the assembly seats have been determined. The ruling United Socialist Party has retained a majority in the national assembly, but the opposition coalition has made significant gains.

The United States congratulates the millions of Venezuelans who exercised their democratic right to vote. With the polls closed and the future at hand, all Venezuelans can now deepen their dialogue and demonstrate their respect for the diversity of views that is essential in a democracy. Venezuelan elected officials now have the opportunity to carry out their duties in a manner that protects and progresses the rights of all Venezuelan citizens.
