የሚገኙ ሰራተኞችና ለዩናይድ ስቴትስ ኢኮኖሚና ማህበራዊ እድገት ያበረከቱት አስተዋፅኦ የሚከበርበት እለት ነው። የሰራተኞች ቀን አከባበር የሚጀምረው የኢንዱስትሪ መስፋፋትን ተከትሎ በርካታ የእድገት ለውጦች በታዩበት 19ኛው መቶ ክፍለዘመን ነው። በወቅቱ በአሜሪካ ይካሄድ የነበረው የእርስ በእርስ ጦርነት እ.አ.አ በ 1865 ከመጠናቀቁ አስቀድሞ - በተለይ በሰሜን ምስራቅ የሚገኙ የዩናይትድ ስቴትስ ከተሞች ከእርሻ መር ኢኮኖሚ ወደ ኢንዱስትሪ ተሸጋግረው ነበር። አዳዲስ የፈጠራ ግኝቶችም የጉልበት ስራ በማሽኖች እንዲተኩ ያስቻሉ ሲሆን በፍጥነት እየተስፋፉ የሄዱት የባቡር ሀዲድ ግንባታዎች ቁሳቁሶች ወደ ተለያዩ ፋብሪካዎችና ገበያዎች በቀላሉ እንዲሰራጩ አግዘዋል። እነዚህ ለውጦች ሰራተኞች በከፍተኛ ሁኔታ እንዲፈልሱ ያደረገ ሲሆን በተለያዩ የገጠር ክፍሎች የሚኖሩ ስራ ፈላጊ አሜሪካኖች የኢንዱስትሪ ከተማ ወደነበሩት ኒው ዮርክ፣ ቺካጎ እና ፒትስበርግ የመሳሰሉ ከተሞች መምጣት ጀመሩ። ጎን ለጎንም አዲስ ሥራ ለማግኘትና ኑሮአቸውን ለማሻሻል የሚፈልጉ በርካታ ስደተኞች በተለይ ከአውሮፓ በከፍተኛ ሁኔታ እየጎረፉ ነበር። የአሜሪካ ኢኮኖሚ እያደገ በሄደ ቁጥር በሺዎች የሚቆጠሩ ሰዎች በየፋብሪካው ውስጥ በቀን አስራ ሁለት ሰዓት፣ በሳምንት ሰባት ቀን- እጅግ አስቸጋሪና አደገኛ በሆነ ሁኔታ ውስጥ ዝቅተኛ ደሞዝ እየተከፈላቸው መስራታቸውን ቀጠሉ። ከዛም ባለፈ እድሜያቸው እስከ አምስት አመት የሚደርሱ ህፃናትን፣ አዋቂዎች በሰዓት ከሚከፈላቸው 20 ሳንቲም እጅግ ባነሰ ክፍያ ማሰራት እየተለመደ መጣ። ቀስ በቀስ ግን አሰሪዎች የተሻለ ክፍያ እንዲከፍሉና የስራ ቦታዎችን ሁኔታ እንዲያሻሽሉ ለመደራደር እንዲቻል የሰራተኛ ማህበራት መደራጀትና የተለያዩ እንቅስቃሴዎችን ማድረግ ጀመሩ። በተለያዩ ግዜያት የሚያዘጋጇቸው ስብሰባዎችንና የስራ ማቆም አድማዎችም አድማውን በሚያካሂዱት ሰራተኞችና አድማ በታኞች መካከል በሚደርስ ግጭት ምክንያት አብዛናውን ግዜ ወደ ሁከት ይቀየራሉ። እ.አ.አ በመስከረም 5/1882 በተካሄደ ተቃውሞ በኒው ዮርክ ከተማ የሚኖሩ 10 ሺህ ሰራተኞች ያለክፍያ ፈቃድ በመውሰደ ከከተማው ማዘጋጃ ቤት ተነስቶ መዳረሻውን በመናፈሻ ቦታ ያደረገ ጉዞ አካሄዱ። ይህ ቀን የመጀመሪያው የሰራተኞች የእረፍት ቀን ተብሎ ተቆጠረ። ከዛን ቀን ወዲህም የሰራተኞች የእረፍት ቀን በይፋ እንዲካሄድ በቀረበው ጥያቄ ላይ የመንገድ ላይ ሰልፍና ለሰራተኞችና ለቤተሰቦቻቸው የመዝናኛ አከባበሮች እንዲያካተቱበት ሐሳብ ቀረበ። ይህ በየዓመቱ የሚከበረው የሰራተኞች ቀን የበጋው ወቅት የሚያበቃበት ይፋዊ ቀን ተደርጎም ይቆጠራል።ለመጀመሪያ ግዜ ሲከበር በታቀደው መሰረትም እስካሁን በዓሉ በተለያዩ ሰልፎችና ቤተሰቦች አንድ ላይ ተሰባስበው ሽርሽሮችንና የተለያዩ ድግሶችን በማዘጋጀት ይከበራል።   የሰራተኞች ቀን ብሄራዊ በዓል ሆኖ እንዲከበር እ.አ.አ በ1894 የቀረበውን ረቂቅ ህግ በፊርማቸው ያፃደቁት ፕሬዝዳንት ግሮቨር ክሊቭላንድ በወቅቱ ሲናገሩ - "እውነተኛ የአሜሪካዊነት ስሜት ለሰራተኞች ለሚሰጥ ክብርና ይህ ክብር በከፍተኛ ልፋት ለመገኘቱ እውቅና ይሰጣል።" ብለው ነበር።
