Abu Ubaydah Yusuf al-Anabi is the leader of the terrorist organization al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, known as AQIM. Among other terrorist acts, AQIM is responsible for the abduction and killing of Americans.

The U.S. Department of State’s Rewards for Justice program is offering a reward of up to $7 million for information leading to Abu Ubaydah Yusuf al-Anabi’s location or identification.

Al-Anabi was announced as leader of AQIM in November 2020, after AQIM’s previous and first emir, Abdelmalek Droukdel, was killed in June 2020.Al-Anabi has pledged allegiance to al-Qaida head Ayman al-Zawahiri on AQIM’s behalf and is expected to play a role in al-Qaida’s global management as Droukdel had done.

Al-Anabi is an Algerian citizen, born in 1969. Previously, he was the leader of AQIM’s Council of Notables and served on AQIM’s Shura Council. In addition, he was AQIM’s media chief. He is also known as Abou Obeida Youssef al-Annabi or Yezid Mebrak.

In 2015, the U.S. State Department designated al-Anabi as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist, which blocked all his property and interests in property subject to U.S. jurisdiction and prohibited U.S. persons from dealing with him. In 2016, he was placed on the United Nations sanctions list, which subjected him to an international asset freeze, travel ban, and arms embargo.

Since its inception in 1984, the Rewards for Justice Program, which is administrated by the U.S. Department of State’s Diplomatic Security Service, has paid in excess of $200 million to more than 200 people who provided actionable information that helped bring terrorists to justice or prevented acts of international terrorism worldwide.
