Burkina Faso is one of a growing number of West African countries where the military has seized power. In September 2022 army officers in the African nation took control even as terrorist groups linked to al-Qaeda and ISIS launched a rebellion that has destabilized the country and its neighbors in West Africa’s Sahel region.
The United States condemns the violence committed by these terrorist groups against civilians, military, and police in Burkina Faso. “Violent extremism has taken a significant toll on the people of Burkina Faso,” said spokesperson State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller, “and our condolences go out to the victims, their families, and their communities. The United States remains a committed partner in the fight against terrorism.”
In light of this security crisis, the United States “is urging the Burkinabe to employ a counterterrorism strategy that prioritizes civil security institutions,” said Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Molly Phee in recent Congressional testimony.
“We know an overly militarized approach to counterterrorism, like the one adopted in Mali, is bound to fail. To address Burkina’s ongoing political instability, we are pressing for a democratic transition in line with a publicly declared timeline,” she said.
The United States is concerned about the actions by Burkina Faso’s Transition Authorities, such as the growing use of targeted forced conscriptions, shrinking civic space, and restrictions on political parties. “These actions have the cumulative effect of silencing individuals who are working on behalf of their country to promote democratic governance and ensure that the people of Burkina Faso’s rights are protected,” warned spokesperson Miller.
The protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms, coupled with the timely investigation into allegations of human rights violations and abuses and holding accountable those found to be responsible, are necessary to build peace and security.
“The United States will continue to engage with the Transition Authorities and others to promote the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms,” said spokesperson Miller. “We also commit to supporting the people of Burkina Faso and their aspirations of a more democratic, prosperous, and peaceful nation.”
