1/13/02 - INTERNATIONAL CRIME ALERT - AL-OMARY - 2003-01-13

On August 10th, 1997, Abdulbasset Al-Omary [ahb-dool-bah-set ahl-oh-mahr-ee] picked up his five-year-old daughter Heidi from his ex-wife Margaret McClain, who is the child's legal guardian. Under the court-ordered visitation arrangement, Al-Omary was required to return the child to her home in Jonesboro, Arkansas, by August 14th, 1997.

Instead, McClain received a call from Al-Omary informing her that he and the child were in Saudi Arabia. "I'm willing to make a deal," he said. "If you wish to have further communications with your darling daughter, you drop all charges of [non-payment of] child support and not bother me when I return here to the United States." McClain immediately informed authorities of her child's abduction.

An Arkansas warrant was issued for Al-Omary's arrest for felony custodial interference. A federal warrant charges him with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.
