“Singapore remains one of our most valued defense partners, and I'm proud that our defense partnership keeps growing stronger,” said U.S. Department of Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin in a recent bilateral meeting with Singapore's Defense Minister Ng Eng Hen.
Singapore is a crucial partner in protecting U.S. interests and security in the Indo-Pacific region. During the past few months, the two countries have worked together to increase cooperation as well as the development of new technology for both trade and defense, said Secretary Austin.
“Last December, our teams finalized the security of supply arrangement, and now we're taking steps to strengthen our supply chain resiliency. In May, our team signed an important Memorandum of Understanding on Defense Innovation. This will help both of our countries to source cutting edge technology quickly and effectively.”
To further this digital technology partnership, the United States and Singapore this month signed a new statement of intent for “data analytics and artificial intelligence cooperation,” said Defense Secretary Austin.
“This major arrangement will strengthen interoperability and promote the responsible use of AI and defense. Our militaries also continue to train together across all domains.”
In addition to digital defense, the United States and Singapore are working together to bolster the physical defense in the Indo-Pacific region, said Secretary Austin.
“Singapore is one of 29 countries participating in a RimPac [Rim of the Pacific] exercise in Hawaii. All these accomplishments underscore the outstanding progress that we've made together to advance our shared vision for a free and open Indo Pacific.”
Secretary Austin said he was proud of “robust partnership” between the United States and Singapore and praised Defense Minister Ng’s efforts to help Singapore uphold and protect “peace and security in the Indo-Pacific and around the world.”
