The United States and India - A Consequential Partnership
Throughout the state visit of India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Washington, President Joe Biden emphasized the growing partnership between the United States and India and their shared values.
“Two proud nations – two proud nations whose love of freedom secured our independence, bound by the same words in our Constitution – the first three words: ‘We the People.’ The enduring ties and shared values between our people and the shared responsibility as global leaders to tackle the great issues of our time together.”
President Biden called the U.S.-India partnership “among the most consequential in the world” and one in which new areas of cooperation are constantly developing.
“India and the United States are collaborating on nearly every human endeavor and delivering progress across the board, from designing new ways to diagnose and treat illnesses like cancer and diabetes; to collaborating on human spaceflight…; to accelerating the global clean energy transition and tacking the climate crisis we face; to harnessing our shared expertise on critical and emerging technologies like quantum computing and artificial intelligence; to ensuring they are not used as tools of misinformation and oppression.”
In addition, the United States and India’s economic and trade relationship is expanding, as are its people to people ties and educational exchanges. The two countries have also made substantial progress in building an advanced and comprehensive defense partnership in which their militaries coordinate closely across all domains.
President Biden said the United States and India “look to one another” on critical regional and global issues that matter most for the future: mitigating the humanitarian tragedies unleashed by Russia’s brutal war in Ukraine; defending the core principles of the U.N. Charter – sovereignty and territorial integrity; ensuring, with their partners in the Quad - Australia and Japan - that the vital Indo-Pacific region remains free, open, prosperous and secure. President Biden also underscored that the strength and success of both the United States and India depend on their democratic governance and respect for human rights, including press and religious freedom.
“Together,” declared President Biden, “we’re unlocking a shared future of what I believe to be unlimited potential.”
