“We must also keep an international spotlight on efforts to ensure justice and accountability for victims of crimes against humanity committed by [ISIS], including genocide against the Yezidis and gender-based violence in Iraq,” urged Ambassador Wood.
“The United States will do whatever we can to support [the Syrian people], including through humanitarian relief,” said President Biden, “to help restore Syria after more than a decade of war and generations of brutality by the Assad family.”
“This is another long example ... of the Iranian regime’s campaign to silence its critics, silence journalists, silence human rights activists, and this includes Narges Mohammadi,” said Deputy Spokesperson Patel.
"If the Kremlin achieves its war aims ... Russia will continue its siege elsewhere and more people, more children, will suffer," said Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield.
The United States welcomed home three American citizens who were imprisoned in China for several years. Mark Swidan, Kai Li and John Leung returned to the U.S. in late November.
While women are disproportionately affected by conflict, they are “underrepresented in the halls of power: from local governments, all the way up to multilateral organizations,” said Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield.
The crisis in Syria can be attributed to “[t]he Assad regime’s ongoing refusal to engage in the political process outlined in UNSCR 2254, and its reliance on Russia and Iran,” said National Security Council Spokesperson Savett.
“Punishing Dong for exercising his freedom of speech and the press, guaranteed by the PRC’s constitution for all its citizens, is unjust,” said U.S. Ambassador to China Nicholas Burns.
“Earlier this year, Houthi militants rounded up scores of UN and diplomatic staff, all of whom were working to bring life-saving assistance to the Yemeni people,” said Ambassador Wood.
"Hamas has cynically demonstrated that it prefers the war continue, including by rejecting multiple ceasefire offers and other formulas that would bring much-needed relief to Palestinian civilians desperate for an end to the fighting," said Ambassador Wood.
“Gender-based violence remains pandemic, with one in three women worldwide experiencing intimate partner and/or non-partner sexual violence in their lifetime,” said Ambassador Lu.
“We are within striking distance of eliminating HIV-transmission. We have the science. We have the treatments. Most of all, we have each other,” said President Joe Biden in a statement.
